Vermont Trails and Greenways - 3rd Annual Trail Symposium

Even though we had torrential downpours, spirits were high at the Kehoe Center, where the Vermont Trails and Greenways Council held the 3rd Annual Vermont Trail Symposium, on October 24th, 2009. This event bought together a variety of professional presenters and an audience that covered the recreational spectrum from motorized to non-motorized and small communities to state lands.

The Vermont Trails and Greenways Council is committed to bringing affordable and accessible education and networking opportunities to Vermont's recreation community. The Trail Symposium is our signature educational event presenting a forum where information can be shared by a diverse audience. This year we were fortunatey to have a very active audience which brought a high degree of interaction and participation to workshops. Engaging presentations, a great and diverse audience, combined with plenty of good food made for a great event! We are targeting the Northeast Kingdom for our 2010 Trail Symposium. The Vermont Trails & Greenways Council is in the planning process for next year's Trails Symposium and here's an opportunity where you and your voice as part of Vermont's trail community can make a difference. Please take part in this survey and add your input! Also, stay tuned for a "Save the Date" announcement for 2010.

We hope to see you at the next Symposium!

Workshops and discussions included:

Navigating the Recreation Trails Grant Program
Sherry Winnie, representing Vermont's Department of Forest and Parks, presented a workshop on applying for the state's Recreation Trails Grant Program, which provides funding for the acquisition and/or development of multi-use recreational trail projects.

Accessibility Standards
Willie Bittner, with Great Lakes Trailbuilders, presented a Discussion on Accessible Trails. This was a very informative presentation that highlighted some of the projects that Willie has worked on recently. Willie was able to share his insight on accessible trails as he has been in the field implementing the best practices.

The Story of the Lamoille Valley Rail Trail
"The Story of the Lamoille Valley Rail Trail" was told by Jessi Hudson and Alan Robertson, representing the Vermont Association of Snowmobile Travelers (VAST). Their power point presentation and synopsis of the process shed some light on the challenges that VAST is being faced with as they are guiding the process of turning the Lamoille Valley Rail Bed into a multi-use trail.

Tool Kits for Trail Maintainers
Matt Dragon, a private trail building/design contractor and Kathryn Wrigley of the Green Mountain Club presented "Tool Kit for Trail Maintainers." This presentation covered what you would find in a typical tool cache for a trail maintainer and delved into the details of tool use and maintenance.

A discussion on ATVs on state lands
Danny Hale, Director of the Vermont All-Terrain Vehicles Sportsman's Association, Inc, facilitated a conversation on the current developments regarding the "hot topic" of ATV use on State Lands.
