From Greenfield to Sunderland, MA, the river flows through a scenic and quiet valley, made possible in part due to a a 15-mile-per-hour speed limit on motorboats and the prohibition of jet skis. The river here is lined by farm fields and woodlands of cottonwoods, willows, silver maples.

There are a couple put-in options here, The Popular Street Access in Montague and the Deerfield River Access . Be prepared for navigating down steep banks at both locations.

There are several islands in this stretch, all owned by the US Fish and Wildlife Service or the state of Massachusetts. Landing is prohibitted at the most upstream island (Third Island) from early March to mid-July to protect the bald eagles that nest here.

Further downstream, look for scenic Cranberry Pond Brook Falls on river left.

The Sunderland Ramp, 11 miles downstream, is the best take-out for this trip. You will need to park in a nearby library.
