The Connecticut River, known by the Algonquian here as Quinihtukqut, meaning \u201cLand of the Long Tidal River,\u201d flows between forested hills and fertile farmland in this scenic reach. This quiet section, well away from major highways, passes through the French King Gorge and by Mount Sugarloaf. Below Turners Falls are a series of lively Class II+ rapids requiring skill to navigate, although they can be avoided via a portage or shuttle from the power company.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

(RM 132.5) Pauchaug Brook Launch is a large state launch with no overnight parking.<\/li>\n\n\n\n
(RM 127.5) Munn\u2019s Ferry is a peaceful camping area operated by FirstLight Power with four tent sites and a lean-to. River access only. Reservations required; call (413) 863-9300 or visit firstlightpower.com.<\/li>\n\n\n\n
(RM 124.4) Riverview Recreation Area is a picnic area operated by FirstLight. Launching a boat requires a 100 yard walk to a raised dock. Northfield\u2019s riverboat (Heritage) departs from here on cruises through the French King Gorge. Be prepared for river fluctuations downstream due to the Northfield Mountain Pumped Storage Project.<\/li>\n\n\n\n
(RM 123) Pass under the French King Bridge, a 782\u2019 cantilever arch bridge built in 1932. The \u201cFrench King Rock\u201d in the middle of the river was named by a French officer of a scouting party during the French and Indian War. The gorge follows a fault-line that created the original Connecticut River 250 million years ago. The rocks on river left are millions of years older than those on the right.<\/li>\n\n\n\n
(RM 122.9) The Millers River (Paquag, meaning \u201cclear water\u201d) enters from the left. This 51 mile tributary offers a variety of recreational opportunities, from long flat-water stretches to Class II-III+ rapids popular with kayakers during the spring.<\/li>\n\n\n\n
